Webinar: Mastering Spatial Separations in Part 9 (BCBC)

Date: April 30, 2026
Time: 9:00 am to 10:30 am PT
Location: Online Event
Cost: Free for BCABD, BOABC, and CHBA BC Members

Spatial separation requirements in Section 9.10. remain one of the most frequent sources of error in Part 9 design and plan reviews. These errors can lead to costly delays, redesigns, and safety concerns.

This technical workshop provides a deep dive into the proper application of Subsections 9.10.14. and 9.10.15. of the BC Building Code. We will break down the complexities of limiting distance and introduce a new Spatial Separation Calculator designed to streamline your workflow and ensure code compliance from the outset.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate Applications: Clearly identify when to apply the specific requirements of 9.10.14. vs. 9.10.15. based on building use and proximity.

  • Execute Precise Calculations: Master the methodology for calculating the maximum allowable area of unprotected or glazed openings.

  • Navigate Fire Safety Variables: Evaluate how fire department response times and the presence of sprinkler systems drastically alter calculation outcomes.

  • Clarify Material Standards: Distinguish between combustible and non-combustible cladding and construction requirements relative to limiting distance.

  • Analyze Geometry Impacts: Understand the nuances of how width-to-height ratios influence cladding and protection requirements.

Presenter: Tony Giroux ASTTBC.CTech, RBD, BCABD President
